How to make a sound absorbing fence

Difference between soundproofing and sound absorbing fence
Please pay attention to this first paragraph. The content of this tips page is meant to improve the acoustics in a garden or courtyard. The objective is to reduce the reflections of sound from a fence, or wall, in a courtyard, porch or garden. This is in order to improve the acoustics in a (semi) outdoor space where you sit, have a party or where children play (making noise). A sound absorbing fence reduces reflections of sound this might help to reduce the spreading of sound to adjacent gardens, provided the fence is high enough. But this is a side effect not the goal of this page.

How to make a sound absorbing fence with outdoor acoustic panels
To modify a fence and give it more, or better, acoustic properties please follow the next steps. Mount slates or boards to close openings, as shown in pictures. Ideally, the fence should be at least 3 meters high, so you benefit optimally from an acoustic fence.

Attaching Stratocell Outdoor acoustic panels

The outdoor acoustic panels, Stratocell Whisper, should be mounted on the side where the sound originates and the acoustics need improvement. The fence should be equipped with Stratocell from about 40 cm above the ground, so it won't get damaged while gardening for example. To attach this product to a fence you can use screws and washers as shown in the photo or with Insulation Nails from our webshop.

About outdoor acoustic panels Stratocell
Stratocell Whisper will degas in the few first weeks, which leaves a greyish tarnish on the surface, you can easily brush this off. Over time, the Stratocell panels will start to look a bit less attractive, due to some discoloration or splashing rainwater. Nevertheless, it won't loses its absorbing properties or its rigidity. We recommend to let ivy grow along the product or place conifers in front of it. Your garden will look greener, hiding the absorption material. Do not "hide" this product behind slats or boards, rendering it useless!
