Soundproofing against upstairs neighbours

Soundproofing airborne noise from upstairs neighbours
Airborne noise are soundwaves travelling by air, loud music, voices etc. When the sound level gets to high the air in your apartment, or house, gets set in motion and becomes audible. To soundproof noise to- or from upstairs neighbours you need to install an acoustic soundproof and decoupled ceiling. This type of ceiling acts as a suspended sound barrier-like construction, mounted without a rigid connection with the building.

With our Akoestikon Acoustic Studs you can make a decoupled soundproof ceiling. If your apartment or flat has thin and light inner walls we recommend to soundproof those as well since they can transport vibrations, and noise, very easily. You can also use the Akoestikon Acoustic Studs to soundproof walls. On the Acoustic Studs page you can download a instruction manual, we also offer a calculator to calculate what you need to soundproof a wall or ceiling.

Soundproofing impact noise from upstairs neighbours
Most sound problems with upstairs neighbours are impact noise related. Impact noise starts as vibrations or resonances in solid matter, concrete or wooden flooring. The most common impact noises, or contact noises, are ticking heels, footsteps, moving furniture and appliances such dryers, washing machines or a refrigerator for example.

Impact noise from appliances and household equipment become audible as humming sound. For the best soundproofing result the source should be isolated from it's foundation, the floor upstairs. If upstairs neighbours install a decoupled floor, you get the best result, for airborne noise as well as for impact noise.

With a screed floor on Regupol Comfort you can isolate impact noise and prevent it from entering the structure of the building. In older homes with a wooden timber floor you can soundproof the floor by adding mass using Isomat KE. This does not decouple the floor, but the increase of mass soundproofs the floor which gives the floor a more of a 'solid state'. See our tips for the complete guide 'How to soundproof a wooden floor'.
