Soundproofing against noise from downstairs neighbour

Soundproofing impact noise from a downstairs neighbour
Impact noise from downstairs neighbours are usually transmitted up via the walls into your home. If neighbours are not willing to soundproof their floor, to reduce impact noise, you can soundproof your walls. The best way to do this is to install decoupled, or false walls, with the use of Akoestikon Acoustic Studs. When your home has concrete floors and you want to prevent the transmission of impact noise from your home to the downstairs neighbours you can soundproof the floor with a decoupled screed floor with the use of Regupol Comfort acoustic underlay.

Soundproofing airborne noise from a downstairs neighbour
Airborne noise from downstairs neighbours is also transmitted via walls. Again, soundproofing at source is always the best solution. If the neighbours don't want to cooperate, you should soundproof the floor with the use of Regupol Comfort in combination with a screed floor, or double layer of reinforced gypsum sheets. This will result in a decoupled floor, soundproofing airborne and impact noise. Regupol is an acoustic underlay that isolates impact noise and is very flexible.

When you have a wooden timber floor you can soundproof the floor by adding mass using Isomat KE. This product does not decouple the floor, but soundproofs the floor by the means of mass. The more mass, Isomat KE, you add the better the result. Soundproofing a wooden timber floor with Isomat reduces airborne noise, such as speech and music, from a downstairs neighbour. See our tips page for a guide on 'How to soundproof a wooden floor'.

As we mentioned, airborne noise can also reach you in a flanking fashion, via walls and sound leaks in the construction, such as cracks, seems and gaps. Check your home for sound leaks before soundproofing a ceiling, wall or floor with Akoestikon Acoustic Studs
