Soundproofing Next-door Neighbours Noise

Soundproofing impact noise from next-door neighbours
Impact noise from your next-door neighbours, footsteps, moving chairs, closing doors, can become audible due to the transmission of vibrations. Especially in older homes, with wooden timber floors, connecting both homes. Soundproofing the floor by means of a decoupled or floating floor at the causative agent would be the most efficient solution. This will prevent and soundproof impact noise (vibrations) right at the source, and therefore the best solution.

When the neigbours that are causing the sound problem of impact noise are not willing to soundproof there floor, you, as the reviecing party, can also do something in order to soundproof against impact noise from upstairs neighbours. This includes a soundproofing combination of your ceiling, floor and/or multiple walls.
With the help of our Akoestikon Acoustic Studs you can make soundproof, decoupled walls and ceilings. These are structures, sound barriers if you like, that cover the whole wall or ceiling and thus soundproofing them.

Soundproofing against noisy next-door neighbours can also mean to soundproof upstairs neighbours, in a flat or apartment for instance. In these situations the ceiling should be soundproofed by means of a decoupled new plasterboard ceiling. With the help of Akoestikon Acoustic Studs you can make a soundproofed decoupled ceiling, finished with a double layer of plasterboard. This soundproof acoustic ceiling acts as a sound barrier, trapping noise inside of it. Decoupled or floating ceiling or wall means a rigid free connection with the building, in other words, mounting of a new wall or ceiling without screws.

Soundproofing airborne noise from next-door neighbours
Airborne noise are vibrations in air, most common noise from neighbours, people talking loudly, sound from loud music or TV. When theses sounds reach a certain level they are strong enough to set the the air in your home in motion, causing the noisy neighbours effect. However, loud music with lots of bass can make walls or ceilings also vibrate and become audible.

Soundproofing a brick party wall
To soundproof a party wall to reduce noise from or to neighbours, you best use Akoestikon Acoustic Studs. With these Acoustic Studs, that function as a spring between the existing wall and a double layer of plasterboard, you can make an new wall (a false wall) in front of the existing wall without a rigid connection. The use of Acoustic Studs prevent and isolate vibrations from travelling into the newly mounted soundproofed wall. Soundproofing a ceiling works in the same manner.

Soundproofing plasterboard wall
Lightweight party walls, ceilings and wooden timber floors, made of plywood or plasterboard, can be soundproofed by adding mass. Sound barrier sheets, or mass loaded vinyl sheets, are great products to soundproof such surfaces. By doubling the weight of a lightweight plasterboard wall, ceiling, or wooden floor, a soundproofing of 10 decibels can be achieved. The more sheets (mass) you add, the heavier a floor or wall, the better the result.

Isomat KE is the best sound barrier product to soundproof a wall, ceiling or floor. We recommend to use Isomat with a weight of 14 kg/m², to be sure of a sufficient amount soundproofing mass. Soundproofing with sound barrier sheets is only efficient if the mass of the surface (plasterboard e.g.) can be doubled of close to a doubling. Whatever you read elsewhere, do not use this kind of products against a brick or concrete wall, this is completely useless! Soundproofing a brick or stone walls should done with a newly placed wall or ceiling, preferably with the use of Acoustic Studs.
