Soundproofing a Roof

How to soundproof a roof or roof boarding
To soundproof a (pitched) roof, an attic, or loft space, to reduce outdoor noises from entering your house or bedroom for example, you need to soundproof the roof boarding inside your house. There are two methods to soundproof a roof, roof boarding, or ceiling. The best result is obtained by installing a new decoupled ceiling or roof boarding with the help of Akoestikon Acoustic Studs, these Studs are best described as spring loaded beams. After installing these acoustic studs, or rails, and with the cavity filling in place, you can finish your new soundproofed roof boarding, or ceiling, with a double layer of plasterboard.

The second method is by adding mass to a plasterboard or plywood ceiling or roof boarding in a loft or attic. Structures made of- or finished with a single layer or plasterboard, or plywood, are far to light to soundproof or insulate outdoor noise. The lack of mass and weight is the reason for this. With Isomat KE, a heavy mass loaded vinyl and sound barrier sheet, you can add sufficient mass and thereby soundproof a roof boarding,  but also wooden timber floors.

By adding mass to these lightweight structures the acoustic insulation will dramatically increase. Each time the mass is doubled you will gain about 6 to 8 decibels. Applying Isomat KE sound barrier sheets is easy. Just use a thin layer of glue on the back of an Isomat sheet, mount the sheet on a layer of plasterboard and mount this to your roof or ceiling with the Isomat facing outwards. The complete guide on how to soundproof roof boarding can be found on "how to soundproof a roof".

Soundproofing and sound insulation for the roof
Acoustic insulation or soundproofing reduces sound from the surrounding area and noise from next-door neighbours. To soundproof a new roof boarding, or ceiling, on the inside of your home is a necessity. The best way to soundproof a roof boarding is to mount a double layer to the boarding with the help of Akoestikon Acoustic Studs. These insulation studs prevent vibrations in the new ceiling or roof boarding and thereby soundproofing the roof.
